doin work

I knew Kobe talked a lot during a game, but damn. I’ve been awaiting this documentary since it was filmed last year, and was pleased with how it turned out. Spike Lee’s Kobe Doin’ Work, which premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, follows Kobe Bryant in a pivotal game against the San Antonio Spurs, from pre-game stretches to post-game interviews.

Much has been said about the film during the weeks leading up to its premiere. The biggest criticism being it’s too much of a Kobe love-fest. Honestly, what else did you expect?

From a fan’s perspective, it’s a rare experience. We get a deeper appreciation for Kobe the basketball mind, rather than the player so many have taken for granted. It is, however, definitely geared towards a specific demographic. Those who merely follow the athlete and the sport casually might find themselves wishing they actually were doing work instead of watching Spike Lee’s latest.
